The new Disney Pixar offering features characters based on feelings. There’s Joy, Anger, Fear, Disgust and…..sadness. According to one father, merchandise based upon these characters just isn’t suitable for his 11 years old daughter. Specifically, the talking Sadness doll, offering up some gems as:
“I’m in an emotional slump – my legs don’t work. Give me an hour.”
“Goodbye friendship, hello loneliness.”
“Crying makes me slow down and obsess over the weight of life’s problems.”
The toy, which is in Disney stores for £15.95 is apparently voicing suicidal thoughts, according to the father:
Andrew (a psychology student ) was shocked when he returned home and overheard the doll voicing “suicidal comments” when his daughter pressed its right hand.
You can read the full article here, but we can’t help thinking it’s a little bit of an overreaction. Taken in the correct context, and if you learn what the movie is actually all about, the doll makes perfect sense. But this father is calling Disney irresponsible and calling for the doll to be removed from the market, even though he doesn’t seem to know much about it.
“I tried to contact Disney who just said the movie is not out yet and maybe the movie will put it in context. “
This movie has a strong message about feelings and learning to deal with them as we grow up. This is after all, nothing but a doll. We think the ‘suicide’ suggestion is a tad OTT. What do you think? Will you seen this movie, and if so will you be getting any of the merchandise?
